EXCERPT
Before Chase could round the car, Roger took off at a dead run toward the alley, hugging the buildings along the sidewalk. Adrenaline packed his veins, shooting blood to his brain, clearing his hearing, vision and thinking processes to hone in on his quarry. This was the reason he loved his job. Not the nights of boring patrols, hauling in drunks or cleaning up prostitutes.

No, he loved going after the bad guys and bringing them down. Face it. He was a thrill junkie. The night shift was the best place to find them.

When he reached the alley, he stood with his back to the wall and waited for Chase to catch up. With a nod toward his partner, he stepped into the dark passage. A shadow moved beside a dumpster. It appeared to be a man. A man carrying another person. A woman.

“Halt! Or I’ll shoot!”

A wicked rumble erupted from the shadows and built into the sound of laughter, a deep masculine laugh. The shadow straightened, the laughter stopped and piercing red eyes turned toward Roger. “Toy cops.”

“Let her go.” Roger called out.

“By all means.” The stranger dropped the body he was holding. It fell to the pavement with a dull whomp
“Now what? Gonna arrest me?”

“Step to the side and lay face to the ground.”

“No, I don’t think so. I don’t like to play by the rules.”

Before Roger could react, the man leapt the six yards between them in one bound.

His finger squeezed on the trigger and his Glock erupted into the man’s belly.

The man only laughed, seized Roger’s weapon and slung it to the side.

Chase unloaded six rounds in rapid succession into the man’s chest.

Other than jerking at the impact, the bullets did nothing but make holes through his body.

He lifted Roger by the front of his uniform and slung him ten feet across the pavement. He landed in the street on his back, all the wind knocked from his lungs, his head pounding hard against the asphalt.

Chase landed beside him.

The stranger stared down at them, his white-blond hair standing up straight in ragged spikes. A smile crept across his face. “I just stopped for a snack. Thanks for the entertainment.” Then the man was gone so fast Roger had to blink to make sure his vision wasn’t impaired by the fall.

Recovering first, Roger sucked air into his lungs in a desperate gasp. “Fuck! What was that?”

When Chase didn’t answer right away, Roger rolled over to check him out. “You all right, buddy?”

His partner pressed a hand to his head. “Did you get the number of that truck that hit me?”

“No shit. I unloaded on him and the bullets didn’t even faze him.” Roger stared into the darkness.

“That was one scary son of a bitch.”

“Yeah. I’m beginning to rethink my career choice.”

Together, Yuri and Reggie seek Reggie’s missing sister and face down the evil behind the disappearances while fighting their growing attraction for each other.

EXCERPT

The woman beside him lay as still as death, her peaches-and-cream skin cool to his touch. He skimmed his fingers over a breast and up to the base of her throat where her pulse beat the strongest. With a deep breath, he leaned into her, his lips pulling back as his teeth extended.

How easy it would be to sink into her jugular and suck the life-giving blood from her body. To give back in return and make her immortal to stand beside him for eternity.

He skimmed the long incisors across her neck, pressing lightly without breaking the skin.

A surge of desire rolled over him like waves crashing against the shore. Struggling against instinct, he proceeded down the base of her throat and across her collarbone to the injured shoulder. He sniffed at the blood still oozing from the wound, like a thick, rich wine to be sipped.

He tasted the nectar, savoring the flavor of her, his body responding to her naked breasts beneath his chin, within easy reach of his mouth. Each pearly mound jutting upward, begging him to take them into his mouth.
She stirred beneath him, her back arching upward, a breast pressing against his chin.

Turning his face just a little, he captured the nipple between his teeth, letting go immediately. He realized his mistake at once. If he didn’t get back to the task at hand, he’d be lost in his own uncontrollable lust.

He skimmed his tongue over the ragged edges of the exit wound until the shattered flesh grew together, the wound fading with each caress. Once the wound in front had disappeared, he turned her onto her stomach, putting those luscious breasts beneath her and out of reach of his roving lips and baser instincts. Then, with long, sure strokes, he laved the wound on her back, the scar shrinking until it disappeared.

She stirred in his grasp, groaning and pushing against the bed.

The taste of her blood an aphrodisiac to his senses, Yuri closed his eyes as the red-haired goddess rolled to her back.

He inhaled and let out a long breath, schooling himself to a calm he didn’t feel. Yet he fought a losing battle against his body. He had to complete the work and get her out of his bed before he did something they would both regret. He opened his eyes and stared only at fading traces of the wound, refusing to note the peachy tips of her breasts now pebbled into tight beads.

With one final stroke, the mark completely disappeared and he leaned back to inspect his work. The injury wouldn’t leave a scar to mar the perfection of her skin.

If he were a gentleman, he’d get off the bed and walk away. He even made a move to do just that.

She shifted beneath him, her hands rising up his torso to clasp around his neck, pulling him closer until his chest rested against her full, ripe breasts.

Yuri froze, his arms braced on either side of her shoulders, his mouth hovering over hers.

Her breath blew softly against his lips, the tangy scent of mint filling his senses.

Move away, he willed his body. But the body wasn’t going anywhere. Nestled against the soft curves, he couldn’t tear himself away.

Her leg curved around the back of his calf, and she pressed her crotch to his thigh. “Love me,” she whispered, her eyes closed, her body caught in a lusty dream. She probably didn’t know who she was or what she was doing, only that she needed to be loved.

Yuri wondered who she was dreaming of. Did she have a boyfriend or a husband lurking in her thoughts and somewhere in Houston? With a quick glance down at her hand, he heaved a sigh. No ring. Good. Then who was she thinking of in her lust-filled trance?

He knew the intensity of lust, having experienced it when he was turned so long ago by the venomous vampire he thought he cared for. Had he known the consequences of making love to her and letting his passion take over, he might have chosen differently. But Katarina hadn’t given him the choice. She’d fooled him into drinking her blood, turning him into a vampire just like her. When she’d taken what she wanted, she left without a trace. No goodbyes, no false declarations of love.

Swearing never to trick an innocent, Yuri knew he couldn’t make love to this woman. He had to be very careful. Caught up in lust, he might forget himself and turn her against her will.

SNIPPET SATURDAY - Workplace

BOOTS AND CHAPS
by Myla Jackson

BLURB

She gave up stripping to go legit…until three Kiowa cowboys bring on the down-and-dirty.

Ugly Stick Saloon, Book 1

Jackson Gray Wolf is turning thirty, and what does he have to show for it? A ranch. No wife, no kids, no dates. He’s had his eye on the pretty owner of the Ugly Stick Saloon, but their one accidental encounter was interrupted before he could get her out of her take-me-now red cowboy boots.

Audrey Anderson isn’t in the market for a man. Been there, done that, has the scars to prove it. She retired her pole-dancing boots after purchasing the Ugly Stick Saloon, and now manages a stable of strippers. When she winds up one stripper short for a private party, she’s forced to slip on a mask and into the role of the mysterious Kiki.

Jackson didn’t want the birthday bash his twin brothers are throwing him, but his vow to ignore the rented stripper goes awry when she shows him exactly how far she’s willing to go—for all three of them.

Audrey can’t forget the sizzling heat between her and one sexy Kiowa in particular. Jackson. Trouble is, she’s not sure if he wants the bold, brassy Kiki, or if he’s ready for the wounded woman underneath.

EXCERPT

Audrey sighed, casting an apologetic smile at Jackson. “Stay, follow or just forget it, I have to get this.” She veered off toward the storeroom, her steps eating the distance. If Jackson stayed put, would he be there when she got back? Or would he leave, bored with the whole idea of stepping outside with her?

Pulling a ring of keys from her jeans pocket, she opened the storeroom and switched on the light. The whiskey Charli needed was perched on the top shelf. Audrey hooked the step stool with her foot, dragged it toward the shelf and climbed up, sliding the heavy box of whiskey toward her. She teetered, the weight causing her to lean backward more than she’d expected.

A large, solid palm attached itself to her butt, bracing her from falling.

“Let me get that.” Jackson’s hand moved from her ass to the box over her head, lifting it from her fingers.

Greta Sue, one of Audrey’s best bouncers, stepped into the doorway, her linebacker body filling the entrance. “Charli said you’d have some whiskey for her.”

“Right here.” Audrey ducked beneath Jackson’s arm, grabbed the heavy box from him and handed it to the bouncer. “Take this to Charli. I’ll be out there to help in a minute.”

“Yes, ma’am.” After Greta Sue left, Audrey stood with her back to Jackson, her pulse slowly returning to normal. “I guess I’d better get back to work.”

She only took one step before Jackson hooked her arm and pulled her back into the storeroom. He kicked shut the door, spun her to face him and then backed her against the wood panel.

Her heart pounding, her vocal cords locking in her throat, Audrey stared up into the midnight-black, smoldering eyes of the Kiowa Indian. Every one of the Gray Wolf brothers had the signature hair and eyes, blacker than the night, and broad shoulders that filled any room they entered. But only Jackson captured her attention and held it so tightly she could barely breathe. He was strong, powerful and reeking of male testosterone. She wanted him to command her, to force her to submit to his every desire.

Audrey fought to regain her breath, bad memories rising to the surface. Suddenly she felt the need to run before she did something she might regret, like fall for the guy. “I really should be getting back to work.”

He planted a hand against the door, effectively blocking any attempt on her part to escape. His brawny arm stretched beside her, the sun-kissed skin smelling of the outdoors and leather. “Do you work all the time?”

Audrey’s inner panic dissolved as her panties dampened, the stirrings of lust gripping her so strongly she couldn’t shake it. “I could ask you the same thing.” Was that really her voice, usually so strong and clear, now breathy and husky?

“I’m here, aren’t I?” He brushed a strand of her hair away from her face and tucked it behind her ear.

“Only as designated driver to your brothers.” She leaned her face into his hand. “They’re adults now. You didn’t have to come.”

“And miss the opportunity to see you?”

Her eyes narrowed. “Since when did you care if you saw me?”

He inched closer, his lips hovering over hers, his knee pressing between her thighs. “Since forever.”

“Liar.” Audrey flattened her hands against his chest with the intent to push him away. Instead, her fingers curled, dragging him nearer by the fabric of his chambray shirt.

With his lips so near, Audrey couldn’t think, couldn’t breathe. When he didn’t seal the kiss, she glanced up, her gaze meeting his.

“Has anyone ever told you that your eyes are as blue as a rain-washed summer sky?” His deep tone resonated against the cardboard boxes of liquor lining the storeroom walls.

Audrey laughed, her stomach fluttering, her knees turning to liquid. “No.”

“Well, someone should. Because they are very beautiful.” His mouth descended, crushing hers with the force of his kiss.

She gasped, her lips parting to allow him inside.

He swept past her teeth, delving deep to tangle and twist, thrusting in and out to the rhythm of lust. His fingers laced in her hair, tugging hard enough to make her scalp sting. The blasts of pain only made Audrey hotter.
Her thighs clenched around Jackson’s knee, her cunt rubbing along the rough denim of his jeans. She ached with the need to be naked, to feel his skin against hers.

Jackson’s lips left hers, burning a trail across her chin and along the convulsing column of her throat. With his free hand, he flipped the buttons loose from her blouse, shoving the edges over her shoulders and down her arms, exposing her favorite demi-bra, the thin black lace barely hiding her nipples. She whispered a silent prayer to the laundry gods for the piles of clothing she needed to wash, forcing her to wear her best bra and panties tonight.

Her shirt fell to the floor and her pulse shot into hyper-speed. This could be her lucky night. She could actually get laid and spare the batteries for once.
